Tourism in Sri Lanka has reached an all-time high. Ever since the end of the civil war in 2009, Sri Lanka has quickly recuperated and is attracting more and more visitors every year. Though small in size, Sri Lanka boasts fantastic eco-diversity, a very rich culture, and a lot of intriguing and fantastic history.

With its stunning beaches and its dense forests, Sri Lanka is quickly growing to be one place that all avid travelers must have near the top of their bucket lists. Here’s what you need to know:

Getting Around

The best way to see all of Sri Lanka is to utilize local transport. With its cheap buses and its traditional “tuk-tuks”, you can move around nearly all of Sri Lanka cheaply and efficiently. With an overwhelming abundance of transport, it is very easy to find one that suits your desires.

You can find a taxi driver, or a chauffeur at your hostel or rest house to take you around and show you the sights. Or you can take the tuk-tuk and enjoy Sri Lanka on a mode of transport you’ll never see at home.

Ella

Ella is one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka. This village is one of the highest populated points and is filled with great hotels and restaurants. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, it is quite a sight.

With its milder climate as compared to the rest of the country, it is a great place for some hiking. The local toy-town close to it is a great destination for tourists.

Explore the History

Sri Lanka has some beautiful historical sites. There is obviously the famous City Center in Kandy, but looking beyond that Sri Lanka is filled to the brim with exotic historical sites. Take a stop at The Temple of Tooth, rumored to contain some of Buddha’s ashes. Another smaller, and calmer, the place is the Lankatilala Vihara. Located on the outskirts of Kandy, this 14th-century temple is gorgeous and cheap to visit.

The Lion Rock

Easily Sri Lanka’s most famous tourist spot, The Lion Rock is a monastery converted into a massive fortress built in the 6th Century. The fortress is immense and filled with fantastic feats of architecture. Rich with history, it commands a very hefty entry fee of $ 26 from overseas tourists. However that money makes it free for Sri Lankan locals, so think of your money well spent in educating generations of Sri Lankans.

There is far more to Sri Lanka than this. You can take some pilgrimages at their local temples, such as Kataragama Temple. Or you can relax on their warm beaches and enjoy the smooth waves of the Arabian Sea. The number of activities is endless.
